Same My Name — Say My Name

Three Tricks You Can Use To Remember A Name

I too was in your shoes (well… not literally). But, I certainly know the awkward feeling of scrambling down the isles through the grocery store, dodging the person that you think you recognize but can’t remember their name.

Making every effort to avoid running into them — looking at shelves of food that you have no intention of buying….

Most recently, I stopped by the supermarket to pick up a few items. I grab my ticket from the dispenser # 63 and look up at the digits on the brightly lit red sign — it reads # 60 — not too bad, only three ahead of me.

As I stand in line at the deli counter, I notice I’m squinting my eyes to read the weekly specials — for some reason they seem smaller today. Note to self — schedule an eye exam…

Suddenly, I feel a gentle tap on my left shoulder — in a split second so many variations of who it could be comes to mind.

As I turn around, I hear hello stranger… Hmmm — I know it’s one of the moms from my daughter’s school, in fact I remember seeing her at “ back to school night”. Her voice is familiar — yet the name comes up blank.

What is her name, what is her name — I feel my cheeks begin to flush from embarrassment as if I just completed a high intensity workout.

Why Can’t I remember Her Name?

I say hey you — and begin the normal chit chat — meanwhile I am reciting the alphabet in my head trying to capture the right name (sometimes it seems to work)…

I hear her talking — at the same time I am trying to search in my mind the classmate’s last name — hoping that will drum up an association, as she’s asking about the car pool, bake sale and then I glance at my ticket — YES — I am next.

I think to myself — please deli clerk person — please call my number…

I politely interrupt to explain I have to figure out what cheese I am going to order — I look at the menu again (cheddar, swiss, provolone — pound — ½ lb — still squinting at the almost unreadable small print)- Ugh… What is her name…

Back at the deli counter — as my swiss cheese is effortlessly sliced, put on the scale (a bit overweight), carefully packaged and placed on the shiny steel counter — I grab it.

I pass by (What’s her name) — I smile and say see you in the schoolyard friend… Walking away, I hear the deli counter person say — Hello Janet, it’s nice to see you today… WOW that’s her name Janet — Susie Thompson’s mom — Janet Thompson. I chuckle to myself as I walk to the check-out…
